Inspired by our National Broadcasters (NRK) big success of Hurtigruten (the 12 day coastal voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes by the Russian border and back) minute by minute and other extremely slow TV programs, one of our largest newspapers VG is now broadcasting directly from the North Light Observatory in Tromsø in Northern Norway. Check what they are saying and follow the action (?) here. (Sorry, this link is not working any more.) And of course, Aurora Borealis doesn't come by order. You might or might not have luck. Just as in real life.
"Without trying to win any prizes for speed or action this coverage aims to give viewers the next best thing to actually being there. The Northern Light has both been the victim of horrifying myths as well as romantic legends. Locals recount one such myth where waving of a white flag underneath the light may result in the light abducting them. Conversely, every year many travel north to conceive their children under the Northern Light believing it will make the children more beautiful.
Last year, the Northern Light was awarded the activity most British people would like to see before they die. Where this spectacle beat other well known wonders such as; The Great Wall in China and even the Pyramids in Egypt. Furthermore, in 2013 the Northern Light in Norway was awarded the most desirable travel experience by Lonely Planet readers. As a result tourism to the region has boomed, and is likely to rise even more due to increased solar system activity during this winter season.
Unfortunately, inclement weather and patience are just about the only things that can hinder viewing this miracle. Where this is exactly the reason VGTV have embarked on this ambitious project."
